We are concerned about our social and welfare responsibilities towards Sustainable Agriculture, Environment, Education & Health Care. We have initiated various projects within our estates, under our Corporate and Social Responsibilities Schemes.
We are committed towards our Corporate Social Responsibilities and have undertaken various projects mainly in the area of education, health and hygiene either directly or under the umbrella of an NGO.
It all started 14 years ago when a little girl was attacked and killed by a leopard at Dikom Tea
estate, which frightened everyone. Since then we saw a drastic increase in the straying of the
leopard in our garden, mainly due to reasons of environmental destruction and their natural
instinct to look for rodents, scraps, pet food, and such to feed. It has also been observed that they
stray during their breeding period. It is the time when the females become more ferocious and
the instinct of motherhood makes them attack anyone whom they feel are danger to their cubs.
At this stage we felt the need to educate the people to conserve and respect nature and with
this in mind a “Wild Life Committee” was formed which started with awareness programs,
displaying documentary clips on behavior of big cats. SOPs were drawn and displayed at
strategic locations of the garden. This program has helped Dikom Tea Estate in capturing and
relocating 37 grownup cats so far with the help of the local forest authority, who were then
relocated to the wild life reserve of Dehing-Patkai, the only rainforest reserve in the Eastern
India.
This has taught people of Dikom to see “Beauty inside the Beast” and to live in harmony with
the nature.
